Reading a manual teaches you the names of controls; running experiments teaches you what they actually do. This sequence starts with the one setting you already own — where you stand — then moves through exposure, aperture and shutter, strips the scene to a single light source, and finally asks you to repeat a result on purpose. Each step leans on the one before it, so the last experiment tests everything the first five taught your hands.

Step 1: Distance changes what the photo says

Before you touch a single menu, prove to yourself that standing position is a camera control. Pick one subject — a friend on a bench, a plant on a windowsill — and shoot it three ways: from across the street, from a normal talking distance, and from close enough that you have to lean in. Do not zoom between shots; leave the lens at the same focal length so distance is the only thing that changes. Then look at all three on a screen. The far frame tells a story about the place; the near frame tells a story about the person. Most people ruin this experiment by zooming in for shot two, which flattens the background differently and cancels the comparison entirely.

Step 2: Bright and dark are choices, not accidents

Framing is handled, so now teach the camera that it cannot know your intent. Find the dial or button marked with a plus and minus — exposure compensation — and set the mode dial to P, A/Av, or S/Tv, since full auto often disables it. Stand still and take the same shot three times: zero, minus one, plus one. A friend against a bright window is a good subject. The camera averages the scene toward medium grey, so at zero the window glows and the face goes dark; plus one rescues the face. The usual slip is judging these on the back screen in direct sun, where every version looks washed out — step into shade or check on a laptop before deciding.

Step 3: One sharp subject, softer background

You already know how to brighten and darken on purpose, which matters here, because a wide aperture lets in a lot of light and you will need to bring the exposure back down. Switch to A or Av and watch the f-number. Small numbers — f/2, f/2.8 — mean a big opening and a soft background; f/8 or f/11 keeps the whole scene reasonably sharp. Try a portrait: focus on the eye nearest you, set f/2.8, stand about a metre and a half away, and shoot. Two traps. The first is using your camera's portrait scene mode, which does the thinking and teaches nothing. The second is expecting creamy background blur at f/1.8 while standing five metres back — blur depends on how close you are, not on the aperture alone.

Step 4: Freeze motion, then let it blur

Aperture moved the shutter speed around, and now you get to steer it directly. Turn the mode dial to S or Tv so you choose the shutter and the camera handles the rest. For frozen motion, use 1/500 or faster and shoot a running tap or a dog mid-jump — the water hangs in the air as separate beads. For deliberate blur, drop to around 1/15 and pan: plant your feet, turn from the waist, keep the subject in the same patch of viewfinder, and keep moving after you press the button. The difference between a blurry mess and a good motion shot is whether the subject stays sharp while the world smears. People try panning at 1/15 without actually panning, then blame the camera for shake they caused.

Step 5: One light source, no flash

By now several automatic decisions have been made quietly on your behalf, so strip the scene down to one light source and watch what direction does. Confirm the flash is off — not on auto, actually off. Then place a person about a metre from a window, turned 45 degrees so one side of the face is lit and the other falls into shadow. That is directional light, and it is why faces look like faces. For a flatter, kinder look, turn them to face the window square-on. For a silhouette, put the window behind them and use the exposure compensation from step two to darken until the face goes dark. Overcast daylight outdoors behaves like an enormous soft window. The likely miss is posing the subject facing the window while you stand beside them, which gives flat, shapeless light.

Step 6: Repeat it on purpose, not by luck

Time to close the loop. Pick the experiment that surprised you most — usually the exposure compensation test or the panning shot — and set out to reproduce that result from nothing, not by adjusting until it looks right. Before you shoot, write down the settings that made it work: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, your distance from the subject, and which direction the light came from. If you liked the blurred cyclist, dial 1/15 back in and pan another one. When the second attempt looks wrong, change exactly one variable and shoot again, so you learn which dial is responsible. The trap is walking away with a single lucky frame and no record of how it happened; a photo you cannot repeat was never really yours. Write the settings on the back of this strip.

Six experiments beat a manual because each one answers a question you already asked by looking at your own photos. A reminder in a phone app vanishes the instant you dismiss it and leaves no trace, while this strip stays taped near your camera bag, visibly getting shorter as each experiment is finished, until there is nothing left to carry.
