The order matters because each step manufactures the raw material the next one needs: a mapped line becomes weekend segments, segments become bank-by-bank notes, notes become a hidden spot you'd never have found by guessing, and the whole set becomes an essay with an actual arc. Skip ahead and you end up with forty random river photos and no structure.
Step 1: Trace the whole river on a map
Before any walking, you need the river's full length, not the postcard bend everyone photographs. Open OpenStreetMap or your city's GIS viewer, search the river's name, and trace it with your cursor from the first blue trickle to where it joins a bigger river, a lake, or a harbor. Drop a pin at both ends and screenshot the whole line. Then count how many road bridges cross it inside city limits — that number becomes your realistic staging plan. Most people pick the famous downtown stretch, walk it in one afternoon, and quietly quit because they have already used up the good part in week one. Knowing the boring outer kilometres exist up front means you plan for them instead of discovering them at step three, when the walk stops feeling like an outing.
Step 2: One stretch every weekend, camera out
Step 1 gave you two pins and a bridge count. Now cut the line between them into five to eight segments, each roughly five to eight kilometres, and commit to one segment every weekend. Pick the same day and time each week so the light is comparable and the photos actually sit together later. At every access point you reach, shoot the same three things: the water surface, the near bank, and the bridge you just crossed. Consistency beats volume here. The usual failure is batching two stretches into a single Saturday to catch up, then treating the missed weekend as proof you have fallen behind and stopping altogether — the river will still be there next week. Twenty photos per walk is plenty.
Step 3: Record what lines each bank
Now go back through the week's photos before you take more. Observation is a separate act from walking, and it is easier on a screen than standing on a bank. Keep one index card per stretch with three columns: left bank, right bank, water. Fill them with nouns. Behind the water treatment plant, for example, you might write 'concrete, no trees for 400 m, faint chlorine smell, two outfalls' — that reads like data, and it will compare against the park stretch two weeks later. Writing 'quiet, kind of industrial' gives you nothing to hold next to anything else. This card set, built stretch by stretch, is what makes the step-4 hidden spot findable rather than lucky.
Step 4: Pick one spot worth returning to
Your step-3 cards are the search instrument here. A hidden spot is rarely the prettiest view; it is the place where the river is hard to reach, which is exactly why it is empty. Look for the gap at the end of a dead-end street, a flood-scoured concrete slab below a weir, or a gravel bar that only appears at low water — the bank notes will point at these. Give yourself one deliberate 200 m detour wherever the river curves away from the road. What people get wrong is crowning a spot that is photogenic but busy and legal only by accident; check for posted private-land signs and a safe way down the bank before you build an essay around it.
Step 5: Cut it to six to ten photos
Editing is the step that turns five weekends into something other people can follow. Start with the step-2 photos, not the step-4 hero shot — the hero shot is the payoff, so it goes near the end. A workable sequence: the source or first trickle, two mid-river stretches, one change-of-character shot from step 3 where industry sits beside park, the hidden spot, and last, the confluence where your river ends. Write one line per photo, present tense, no adjectives. Posting 40 photos in upload order and calling it an essay is the common shortcut, and the river's arc disappears — nobody reads past photo four.
A reminder in your phone vanishes the moment you dismiss it, leaving no trace of the four weekends already spent. A paper strip taped somewhere you actually look gets visibly shorter as each step comes off, and it stays there until the last one is gone.
